A realtor for some four decades and a career politician by profession, the Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, M.Sc. (Hon.), JP, has been a member of the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly for almost 25 years.
His experience includes nine years with the Cayman Islands Executive Council/Cabinet during which he has served as Leader of Government Business, as a Minister, and as Leader of the Opposition.
A founding member and leader of the United Democratic Party, Mr. Bush is currently the Premier of the Cayman Islands and Minister of Finance, Tourism and Development.
His list of accomplishments as a legislator is both lengthy and impressive. It includes initiatives such as the development of the National Tourism Management Policy; the National Environmental Policy Framework Plan, and the Cayman Islands Economic Development Plan.
Mr. Bush was also instrumental in the creation of the Order of National Heroes designation, and assisted with the creation of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority and the Cayman Islands Stock Exchange.
Also a member of the Cayman Islands Parliamentary Association (CPA) for the past 14 years, he presently serves as the CPA’s vice-president. As chairman of the Regional Executive Committee, he has represented the Islands overseas, as well as the Caribbean and Atlantic regions on the International Executive Committee.
A community figurehead, Mr. Bush has donated considerable time and resources to the people of the Cayman Islands. Notably, his interest in younger citizens resulted in his being instrumental in forming the Islands’ Youth Parliament.
In recent years he likewise founded The McKeeva Bush Foundation for Children and Elderly in Need, an organisation through which he has assisted numerous students with school supplies and tertiary education scholarships.
Such dedication to the community has not gone unnoticed and he has been the recipient of numerous awards, chief amongst them being the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honour, bestowed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in January 1997. Local recognition includes an honorary master’s degree in humanities from the International College of the Cayman Islands.
He has been a Marriage Officer since 1986 and a Justice of the Peace since 1993.
